2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Black Edition

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Black Edition – Mitsubishi needed a big hit to truly return to greatness in the US. This new three-row compact SUV could be just what they need.

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact SUV that shares some DNA with the Nissan Rogue. Then, Mitsubishi developed a three-row family dump truck that is only a few inches longer than its main competitors. The only difference is that the third row of seats is standard.

Mitsubishi’s sole function is to create its own style. They were guided by the idea of combining signature design elements such as the dynamic shield grille and front end, with new elements for the brand. For example, the C-pillar roofline adds a “floating roof” motif attached to vertical glass panels.

Mitsubishi Outlander Interior

The 2022 Outlander stands out from all others in its class. The headlight units are now lower in the front clips, mounted either side of the “Dynamic Shield” lettering. High beam headlights with LED turn signals are located at the top of the clip. It gets a large radiator grille that has a three-dimensional shape and feel.

The rest of the 2022 Outlander is as bold as the front clip. It looks classy but elegant. The door opens wide to enter the interior. Our SEL Launch Edition tester adds plenty of chrome trim, a nice set of 20-inch alloy wheels and a “Dynamic Shield” LED front lighting strip.

This luxurious feel continues inside with semi-aniline quilted leather seats and trim. Our tester used this black upholstery with orange stitching and trim. The seats in the first two rows are very comfortable. The front row has memory adjustment as well as power recline, tilt, height and lumbar adjustment.

The second row also has manual tilt and tilt adjustment. We found that tall second-row passengers had to duck their heads into the space behind the panoramic sunroof. The third row is for children only and can be accessed by sliding the second row seats forward.

Cargo space starts with 11.7 cubic feet of space behind the third row. When the third row is folded down, that space increases to 33.5 cubic feet. With both rear rows folded down, you get 78.3 cubic feet of space.

Where the 2022 Outlander excels in terms of interior is right in front of the driver. The SEL Launch Edition features a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster that is customizable and informative. It was complemented with a projection screen in our tester. Overall, it was a very good setup.

We also like other interior touches, like the thick-rimmed steering wheel with 10-2 position to 9-3 position paddles. The gear lever has a cable shift mechanism which is really easy to use. We also like that the infotainment dials sit atop the center stack on a sturdy tablet-like display stand. All other controls are also easy to use and pleasant to the touch.

The 2022 Outlander is powered by a new 181-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It is mated to a continuously variable transmission with eight gear ratios available to the driver via a pair of paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Our tester had Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control system, which is controlled by a button on the center console. You now have six preset driving modes, including a dirt mode for maximum four-wheel performance.

The ride quality of the 2022 Outlander is very smooth and absorbs all surfaces. We found handling to be good, with the Outlander exhibiting minimal lean and roll when cornering.

The steering system provided a tight turning radius while providing adequate steering control. On-center feel was good and the new steering wheel really made a difference in handling. Braking was very good with excellent stops in normal and panic situations.
