Alec Baldwin is suing a gunman and others associated with the movie Rust after he was given a loaded gun on set and shot a cinematographer last year.

Baldwin claims in the lawsuit that the shooting was caused by the negligence of gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was in charge of guns and ammunition on set; assistant director Dave Halls, who handed the gun to Baldwin and told him it was safe; Sarah Zachry, who was in charge of props; and Seth Kenney, who supplied guns and ammo on set and assisted the gunner. Baldwin, who has been sued since the shooting, is “seeking to clear his name” and get the defendants to “recant their misconduct,” according to a countersuit filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court by the actor’s attorney, Luke Nicks.

“This tragedy occurred because live bullets were brought onto the field and loaded into the gun, Gutierrez-Reed failed to thoroughly inspect the bullets or the gun, Halls failed to thoroughly inspect the gun and yet declared the gun safe before giving it to Baldwin.” , and Zachry failed to disclose that Gutierrez-Reed acted recklessly and endangered the safety of those around him,” Nick wrote.

The Washington Post could not immediately be reached for comment Friday night.

in 2021 In October, Baldwin was in a church building at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe, US, training to fire a gun when it exploded, killing cinematographer Halyn Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. It is not clear why the prop had a live round.

According to interviews conducted by the Sante Fe County Sheriff’s Office, people on set saw and heard Halls take a .45 Long Colt revolver from Gutierrez-Reed, declare it a “cold weapon” and hand it to Baldwin. An industry term meaning that the gun does not contain live ammunition.

Baldwin’s lawsuit is the latest since the shooting: Gutierrez-Reed sued Kenney, saying he was responsible for the live ammunition used during the shooting. Script supervisor Mamie Mitchell sued several, including Baldwin, Gutierrez-Reed, and Halls, over job-safety allegations.

Matthew Hutchins, Halyna Hutchins’ husband, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit this year against Baldwin and other entities associated with the development, seeking compensatory and punitive damages. The defendants settled the lawsuit last month.
