Good news for the Monday morning show: Amazon Studios is getting back into the wide theatrical release business with Ben Affleck’s Nike movie Air, with its companion star Goodwill Hunt co-Oscar winner Matt Damon. Air will receive a worldwide theatrical release on Wednesday, April 5 this year, leading into the lucrative Easter weekend. This is Amazon’s first wide theatrical release since its Sundance acquisition, Mindy Kaling’s late night, which had a wide summer release in 2019.
i hear Air will have a theatrical window beyond Amazon Studios’ recent limited theatrical releases, before hitting Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. It is truly a first-of-its-kind arrangement for the studio as Amazon Studios will distribute the film globally, with Warner Bros. Pictures is handling international distribution as part of its distribution deal with MGM Amazon. Amazon Studios only had SA on late night, not global rights.
Air features the incredible game-changing partnership between then-rookie Michael Jordan and Nike’s fledgling basketball division, who changed the world of sports and contemporary culture with the Air Jordan brand. This moving story follows the career-defining gamble of an unconventional team with everything on the line, the unparalleled insight of a mother who knows the value of her son’s great talent, and the ball phenomenon -a basket that would be the biggest ever.
Damon plays maverick Nike player Sonny Vaccaro and Affleck plays Nike co-founder Phil Knight with Jason Bateman as Rob Strasser, Chris Messina as David Falk, Matthew Maher as Peter Moore, Marlon Wayans as George Raveling, Chris Tucker as Howard White, Viola Davis as Deloris Jordan, Gustaf Skarsgård as Horst Dassler, and Julius Tennon as James Jordan – among others. While Damon and Affleck appeared in such films together such as Goodwill Hunt and Dogma, Air producers the first time Affleck has directed his longtime friend.
“Ben, Matt, and this all-star cast have delivered an extraordinary film that will move, inspire and entertain audiences around the world,” said Jennifer Salke, CEO of Amazon and MGM Studios. “With Ben’s stunning direction, the film provides a nostalgic look at a culture-defining era that is perfectly suited to a global theatrical event.”

The film was a unique experience where we had the honor of working with some of the best cast and crew in the industry, all of whom brought passion, tenacity and creativity to the joint endeavor. to recreate a wonderful and ambitious story. I appreciate and appreciate Jen Salke’s faith in our ability to execute and deliver a film we are proud of, as well as the incredible ongoing support she and Sue Kroll have given the film. Amazon Studios, Skydance, and Mandalay were all essential to making this happen, and the film could not have been made without them. We appreciate the steps he took on each of their parts to make it happen and we want to thank them. It was the best creative and personal experience of our lives and we look forward to many more like it.”

Starting in the fall of 2019, Amazon started switching to a short theatrical window for its titles before entering their OTT service, i.e. the film Adam Driver The Report and the movie Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones The Aeronauts. They have kept that model for a long time, even for the big expensive movies they got during the pandemic, ie Coming 2 America, Cinderella, and War tomorrow.
