On the second season of “The Kardashians”, Kim Kardashian described the day she and her husband Ye gave birth to their first child North West, crediting a custom dress designed by a director creative Balmain Olivier Rousteing.
In the episode, Kardashian traveled to Paris with her eldest daughter North West for Paris Fashion Week, where Kardashian walked for Balenciaga. The pair also attended the Jean Paul Gaultier Couture fall/winter fashion show and were nominated by Rousteing for their appearance.
While she was with North, Rousteing, and her mother Kris Jenner, Kardashian shared a little anecdote about Rousteing and the famous Balmain dress he designed for her.
“Northie, I’ve known Olivier since you were a baby, and he gave Daddy this blue dress that Daddy wanted for me,” Kardashian told North between bites of French fries and a sip of Coca-Cola “It was my birthday, the year before you were born, and I put on the dress, and I got pregnant, and you got inside me the night I put on that dress.”
“So, maybe Olivier has a little something to do with why you’re on this planet,” she continued.
Kardashian wore that dress to the Angel Ball on October 22, 2012, which falls about eight months before North West’s birthday, June 15, 2013.
Rousteing previously talked about the dress, and subsequently North’s concept, in a Q&A video in 2016 for Kardashian’s app that appears to be no longer available. Per Refinery29, however, Rousteing said in the video that the first dress he made for Kardashian was a “long, navy blue dress” by Kardashian’s ex-husband Ye, formerly known as Kanye West , requested. Rousteing went on to say that the “most amazing thing” about the outfit was that Kardashian was wearing it the night North was born.
“I don’t know if I can say, maybe it’s a secret, but I know that Kanye told me,” Rousteing said in the video. “So I just wanted to share it you guys.”
