Microsoft extends its long-term relationship with OpenAI with “multi-year, multi-billion dollar” new investments. The investment comes just weeks after Microsoft is said to be investing billions in OpenAI, creators of popular AI tools such as ChatGPT and DALL-E 2. This is Microsoft’s third investment in the company. Microsoft first invested in OpenAI in 2019, and again in 2021. The New York Times notes that it has “quietly” invested another $2 billion since that first round.

Microsoft did not disclose how much it invested in OpenAI. A Bloomberg report says Microsoft is investing $10 billion “over many years.”

“We built our partnership with OpenAI around a shared desire to advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform,” said Microsoft’s CEO. Satya Nadella in a blog post. “In this next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain with Azure to build and run their applications,” he added.
The deal will see Microsoft increase its investment in the development and deployment of supercomputing systems to support OpenAI research. One key part of the agreement is that Microsoft is OpenAI’s exclusive cloud partner, and that the company’s cloud services will power all OpenAI workloads across products, API services, and research.

Microsoft also plans to deploy OpenAI models in various consumer and business products. The company is rumored to be preparing to challenge Google with the integration of ChatGPT into Bing search results. Some reports also say that Microsoft could get 75 percent of OpenAI’s profits until it secures its return on investment and a 49 percent stake in the company.
