Road America announces the completion of the Repave project
ELKHART LAKE, Wis., 2022 November 3 – A ribbon was cut today at America’s National Speedway to mark the completion of a long-awaited replacement project for the racetrack, which has not been overhauled since 1995. Milling and grinding of all 4,048 miles of the racetrack, including the pit lane, began in October. 3. At the end of October, fine grading, a new base layer and a new final layer of surface asphalt followed. Now, the all-new racing surface is set to cure the entire off-season until 2023. season.
The big news is that, apart from the possibility of minor changes, the original configuration of the entire race track has remained the same. Advanced Materials Services consultants, Walbec Group engineers and their Northeast Asphalt team paid attention to the history and authentic character of the tracks. Before the old surface was milled out, the entire race track was inspected to allow engineers and Road America to review the unique features of the track and make decisions that guided the grade control process at every step of the paving process. More than 7,000 grade control points were established to guide the grading and paving process to ensure track widths, camber angles and curb locations are accurate to within a tenth of an inch.
“Our aim was to restore the track exactly as we found it, to maintain its distinctive features and the track’s significance in the racing world,” said Craig Donze, head of engineering at Walbec Group. “High-quality aggregates were sourced locally from Wisconsin, and the team used a highly polymerized asphalt mix to increase durability. Throughout the project, several tests were carried out to ensure that the surface could withstand the weather and stress of racing. Teamwork from initial planning to construction resulted in a race surface that will delight competitors and race fans for years to come.
Engineers and Road America collaborated throughout the project to improve drainage around the property and upgrade features that cross under the race surface prior to paving. This included increasing the size of culverts and laying new pipes under the track to support the facility’s events. More than 800 trucks were removed during the milling process, with nearly as many trucks bringing in new asphalt racing surface for paving. During the project, two paving machines were operated in echelon (side by side) to reduce the visibility of the center joint and maintain a constant density.
“This has been a tremendous effort and we are very excited to have a new racetrack for competitors and fans to enjoy,” said Road America President and CEO Mike Kertscher. “The goal was to keep it the way our founder Clif Tufte envisioned it, and we’re confident we’ve achieved that goal.” We look forward to the future with this brand new track and pit lane and encourage everyone to purchase their season tickets, tickets and camp as we look forward to the 2023 season. the season is going to be incredible.
