- Gomez also said she felt like she “didn’t belong” and “never fit in” with other celebrities.
Selena Gomez has been a longtime member of Taylor Swift’s star friend group, but Gomez said Swift is her “only friend” in the entertainment industry.
Gomez talked about her life in the entertainment industry with Rolling Stone’s Alex Morris in an interview published Thursday. The singer’s new documentary, “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” which chronicles her mental health journey since 2016, was also released Friday.
Gomez told Rolling Stone that she struggled to find her sound and appeal to her fans as she came of age. The former Disney star also said that she didn’t have many famous friends with whom she could talk about her problems.
“I never fit in with a great group of girls who were famous. Taylor is the only friend I have in the business [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong. I felt the presence of everyone around me living full life. I had this situation, and I was very happy, but … was I? Do these material things make me happy? ” she said, saying, “I didn’t like who I was, because I didn’t know who I was.”
Swift and Gomez met in 2005. Gomez told KIIS FM UK in 2017 that they were both members of The Jonas Brothers at the time and “just clicked.”
The friends have complimented each other in recent weeks. Gomez shared on her new SiriusXM Radio channel Thursday that Swift is the “most influential artist to me,” according to Billboard.
“Not because she’s my friend, but she’s been an artist who can move into so many different genres and she’s able to do it seamlessly and I to appreciate that so much. And that’s so rare,” she said. “I love her process and I admire all the work she’s done. She’s definitely inspired me.”
Swift, who released her 10th studio album “Midnights” on Oct. 21, showed support for Gomez and her new film. In an Instagram story posted on Friday, the singer shared the trailer for “My Mind & Me” and a sweet note for the “Only Murders in the Building” actress.
“So proud of you @selenagomez,” she wrote. “Love you forever.”
