
This has been a big week for Apple Intellectual Property matters regarding trademarks. Apple has been granted 9 Registered Trademark Certificates (RTM) covering the processor types ‘M1’ and ‘A15 Bionic,’ in addition to others related to ‘Apple AirTag,’ ‘XCode Cloud’ and more. Apple has also filed figurative trademarks related to ‘Works with Apple Home,’ ‘WeatherKit’ and more in the US and Hong Kong.

Apple Received Registered Trademark (RTM) Certificate for ‘Apple M1’ which was filed under International Class 009 to cover: “computers; computer hardware, namely, integrated circuits and computer chips.”

Case in point: Apple AirTag
Apple Received Two Registered Trademark (RTM) Certificates for the Iconic Version (Image Version) of the ‘Apple AirTag.’ The original RTM certificate #6,906,359 as noted below, was included below International class 018 cover: Leather carrying cases, leather belts, leather key chains and luggage tags.”

Memory Blends
Apple was granted a Registered Trademark Certificate (RTM) for the ‘Memory Mix.” Apple’s Registered Trademark Certificate #6,904,960 was filed their trademark under International Class 009 to cover: “downloadable computer software for displaying and pairing photos and videos with music; downloadable software for creating digital photo albums and videos paired with music.”

XCode Cloud
Finally, the US Patent and Trademark Office granted Registered Trademark Certificate (RTM) #6,899,157 filed under International Class 042 including: “Computer software design and development; computer software consulting; cloud computing featuring software for use in designing, developing, testing, updating, releasing, and distributing other software applications; providing offline computer software for use in development, testing. , reviewing, releasing, and distributing other software applications, providing online non-downloadable application development software, providing computer software information on the Internet, technical support services, namely, diagnosing and solving computer software problems.’

Symbolic trademark: Works with Apple Home
Beyond the Registered Trademark Certificates issued by Apple, the company filed a trademark that stands for “Works with Apple Home.”

Apple has filed its trademark under two international classes. The first class is 009 covering: “Computers; computer hardware; wireless communications equipment for transmitting voice, data, images, sound, video, and multimedia content; computer accessories; cameras; digital audio and video players and recorders; audio speakers; amplifiers and receivers; televisions; receivers televisions and monitors; radio transmitters and receivers; remote controls used to control computers, irrigation systems, faucets, lights, audio receivers, speakers, security and surveillance equipment and systems, alarms, cameras, locks, routes, power outlets, electric motion sensors, doorbells, electric doorbells with video cameras, doors, garage doors, leak detectors, electronic air quality sensors and monitors, humidity monitors, thermostats, heating systems, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, home appliances, televisions, home theater systems, entertainment systems, windows, window shades, shutters, and blinds; temperature control devices; thermostats; monitors, sensors, and controls for air conditioning, heating, and ventilation equipment and systems; lighting control devices; electrical stores; electrical and electronic switches; alarms, alarm sensors, and alarm monitoring systems; smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; electric and electronic locks and hardware for doors and windows; electric and electronic controls for garage doors; residential security systems and surveillance systems.”
Coincidentally, we’ve included two recent patent filings from Apple’s video cameras covering the door (01 and 02).
The second class is 011 covering: “Apparatus for lighting, heating, cooling, air conditioning, heating, ventilating, cooking, refrigerating, washing, drying, plumbing, water supply, and sanitary purposes; lamps, lighting fixtures and lamps; heaters, air conditioners, and electric fans; sinks and sink fixtures.”
Apple filed this mark with the Hong Kong Patent and Trademark Office under #306111954 under the same International Classes.
Apple has also filed two Trademark icons in Hong Kong representing the WeatherKit and Apple Weather App icons as presented below.

For the WeatherKit icon Apple filed its trademark under 009 which includes: “Computer software; program development software; computer software for use as an application program interface (API) for creating software applications; software for processing, transmitting and displaying text, data, images, sound , audio visual content, and other multimedia content, computer software for viewing weather information, computer software development tools.’
For the weather app icon Apple filed its trademark under 009 which includes: “Computer software; software for processing, transmitting and displaying text, data, images, audio, audiovisual content, and other multimedia content; computer software for viewing weather information.”
For the record, choosing the right trademark classes is important because trademark registration will only protect Apple’s trademark in the classes originally filed in its application. This is important in any international trademark challenge.
