How Should I Prepare My Dog for Birth?
Dr. Louis DelGiudice—national director of emergency care at AmeriVet Partners Management Inc.—said there’s a lot owners can do to prepare their dog for delivery.
First, she recommends that owners visit their primary care veterinarian for a prenatal checkup, including radiographs and an ultrasound.
“These diagnostic tools will assess the number of babies to expect and provide an assessment of the baby’s size,” he said. Newsweek.
“[These tests can also] help to determine the possibility of dystocia (difficult birth).
Next, owners should also prepare the place where their pet gives birth, with DelGiudice recommending “a quiet place in the house with a litter box.”
Also known as a “litter box,” a litter box creates a small, safe space for a dog to give birth and can be purchased online or made at home. The box needs to be warm, so fill it with cozy bedding and avoid things (such as grass) that can irritate the dogs’ eyes. Puppies will spend most of their first month in this box, the high sides keep the little guys safe.
DelGiudice also advises owners to talk to their vet about the mother’s diet, to ensure she is getting a healthy calorie-dense diet during pregnancy and lactation.
How can you tell if your dog is ready to breed? DelGiudice said the first stages of stroke can last between six and 36 hours.
“Symptoms you can notice are labor, restlessness, shortness of breath, and lack of interest in eating,” he said.
What if you end up in a situation like Kelly, where your dog gives birth unexpectedly? DelGiudice advised the owners to “leave it alone.”
“Most of the time it is good to leave the dog alone and let him continue to break without being disturbed, but he should be educated about the signs that indicate that it is dystocia or difficulty in birth that needs intervention,” he said.
“A black, bloody or green discharge from the vulva prior to being spanked may be a sign of dystocia. During labor 20 to 30 minutes of strong contractions, without the pup being born, is a sign of concern.”
He said puppies are usually born every 30 to 60 minutes, but up to two hours can be normal. If your dog is still struggling after three hours, it is a cause for concern, so reach out to an emergency vet for help.
“If you see a puppy stuck in a ditch and can’t get out, you should also see your pet,” he said.
“Make sure the placenta is delivered with each puppy. If the puppy is not delivered with the placenta, it is usually delivered after 5 to 10 minutes.”
Once labor is over, allow the mother to clean her babies, and check to see if she’s feeding them litter every two to three hours during nursing.
‘Oh my goodness’
In her video, Kelly Love explained that her friend’s Great Dane stayed with her after her friend’s house flooded during Hurricane Ian. The mother dog wasn’t expected to give birth until the weekend, but the puppies decided to come a few days early—while Kelly was in the middle of a client meeting at her home studio.
“Oh my God,” screamed Kelly Love when she found out the dog had given birth to her first puppy. “Lick the puppy yes! Pretty girl.”
Captioning the video, Kelly Love wrote: “[This is] It’s a very sad thing because I don’t know when it comes to dogs being beaten.”
Thando explained the situation to his clients and rescheduled the appointment. Her roommate went to pick up her friend, while Love stayed behind to watch over the mother dog, rubbing her back to comfort her.
However, his strong stomach was tested when the dog ate the babysitter.
“Holy f***** s***,” he said in the clip, turning away and trying not to vomit. He then laughed straight into the camera for support.
When the mother dog started cleaning her puppies, Kelly started to feel sad.
“Here the mother was cleaning her child and the umbilical cord and sac were in the mouth,” he wrote in his acting.
“It’s all downhill from here,” he said, as onlookers watched him throw himself into a nearby sink. He then walked around the room trying not to throw up again.
“At this point I stopped trying to live together,” he wrote.
In another clip added a few hours later, Love updated users on the puppies’ progress. The mother and all three children are fine, there is one Harlequin puppy (with black and white spots), one black and blue puppy.
TikTok users applauded Love’s efforts, even if she ended up vomiting.
“He handled it very well,” Christi Butler commented. “I don’t think you should be a maternity nurse with that gag, but you still killed it!”
“It’s an emotional situation you just went through,” joked Gabriel Martinez.
“I’m sorry I laughed so hard when you shut up,” wrote @havinfun.
While MandiRie commented: “It was my dog and I was fine and I did EXACTLY what you did LMAO. You did AMAZING.”
